Artist Statement

My works use a combination of printmaking processes, namely intaglio and screen print, to depict panoramic landscapes of massive oceans and foreboding skies. The prints explore nostalgia and inconsistencies of memory. The recent work, Gaspee Down the Line, presents a view of Scarborough beach in Rhode Island. Named for Gaspee Road that empties onto the state beach in Narragansett, this particular area has been popularly referred to as “down the line” by college friends who went to the University of Rhode Island and lived off-campus. Details include a climbing wave, starfish abandoning the sea, melting suns with twirling blue water droplets, and cascading bananas (which allude to my childhood trick of lowering them from the loft to startle my Gram at her beach cottage in Matunuck). Other works include The Providence River Cover Up, the title of which lends itself to the storied and romanticized versions of Providence mob history as much as it references an oftentimes purposeful erasure of certain histories in favor of more popular and palatable ones; and Leave Your Troubles Behind where an oddly monumental sun casts a golden glimmer on the ocean, fireworks explode in the distance and a small fishing vessel hurries away from Block Island followed by a shrouded sea creature.

Allison Bianco received her MFA in Printmaking (2010) from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, Honolulu, HI and her BA in Studio Art (2001) from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA. Bianco has recently been awarded a public art commission for New York City public school 671K in Brooklyn for a new, permanent site-specific artwork. The commission is through the New York City School Construction Authority, Public Art for Public Schools program in collaboration with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Percent for Art program for the collection of the New York City Department of Education. Bianco is the recipient of a Visual Arts Sea Grant from the University of Rhode Island and her work was selected for a solo exhibition at The Print Center in Philadelphia as part of their 88th International Competition. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; The New York Public Library, NY; RISD Museum, RI; Yale University Art Gallery, CT; University of San Diego, CA; and the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, HI; among others. Allison Bianco lives and works in Rhode Island and her work is represented by Cade Tompkins Projects.
